Everyone loves a good partying holiday, and whether you are saving up for the big trip to Magaluf, or something a little more refined in opulent Biarritz, people of all ages like to put on their glad rags and dance the night away. But the standard beach holiday has become a little clichéd, not to mention over-crowded, so why not search for a partying break that is a little more memorable and unique.
From dive bars in Bogota, to all night raves, here is a look at some of the best and most unique places in the world to drink, dance and be merry.
The Indian Ocean
These days partying on land is so passé that people all over the world are heading out into the seas to have a good time. At luxury resorts in places such as Mauritius or The Maldives you can hire a yacht charter for the night to take you out into the shimmering Indian Ocean, where parties on deck can be as loud as you want, and last until the sun rises over the waters. After you have partied through the night, skinny dip in the ocean to cool down, and sail back to the beach to sleep off that hang-over in the shade of palm trees, a light ocean breeze keeping you cool.
If you cannot afford a bareboat charter out into the glistening tropical waters of the Indian Ocean then the next best thing is surely a beach party, and nowhere hosts beach parties as epic as Thailand, where the Full Moon Party in Ko Pha Ngan attracts hard-core party addicts from all over the world. The name may have suggested it already, but this party takes place once every lunar month in the light of a full moon, and is known to be pretty much the wildest party on the planet. Though it started out in the 80s with just a few dozen people each month, the parties now regularly host up to 30,000 people on the same beach during the summer, and with drinks cheap, locals friendly and the music great, this is one of the best party nights in the world.
The frozen wastelands of the north may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of partying, but the sub-Arctic conditions of Iceland’s capital city Reykjavik make for some pretty incredible partying during the summer months. This is because, being so far north, it stays light all through the night for a number of days during the summer. And, after living in near darkness all winter, the locals sure know how to take advantage of this, organising the legendary Runtur, a Saturday night pub crawl that begins at the stroke of midnight and lasts until, well, I was going to say until the sun rises, but essentially until the hardiest party-goers pass out through exhaustion.
More infamous for notorious drug cartels and unrestrained gang violence than as a holiday destination, Bogota has shrugged off its dark past and has reinvented itself as young, hip and cool. Street trends in the Colombian capital change by the week, and whether you want ultra-sleek and stylish nightclubs for the beautiful people, raucous rock bars, or radical cafés where young revolutionaries read their poetry and manifestos, Bogota has it all. Stay in the upper class northern barrios for high-end and high priced, cocktails, or slum it with the locals at vibrant dive bars in El Chapinero, known as the city’s gay and alternative hotspot. Wherever you head in this amazing city, the warmth, style and verve of the locals is sure to impress.
